About The WordPlayers

The WordPlayers is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) theatre company formed in 1995 by Christian theatre artists in Knoxville, Tennessee. These artists were interested in providing artistically excellent programming and dedicated to the mission of using theatre to explore Judeo-Christian values for education, enlightenment, and entertainment.

The WordPlayers has two wings to its production programming. The Touring Wing brings quality entertainment to churches, schools, prisons, missions, - wherever two or more are gathered. The shows are flexibly designed with little or no reliance on technical production values, so that no specific lighting or stage space is required. These productions might be one-acts plays, or variable-length programs consisting of Scripture-based sketches, monologues, songs, interpretive movement or dance. The WordPlayers tours primarily in the greater Knoxville area but has, on occasion, extended its ministry to other parts of the state as well as going out-of-state.

The Mainstage Wing produces full-length or one-act plays in more traditional theatre venues. Plays are chosen from a faith-based perspective, intended to be challenging, entertaining, and thought-provoking. The WordPlayers has collaborated on mainstage productions with such organizations as Knoxville Museum of Art, Pellissippi State Community College and The Bijou Theater Center.

The WordPlayers is provided oversight by a Board of Directors comprised of theatre artists involved in the work of the company, plus several community volunteers who have expertise in the areas of law, accounting, and management.
